For Merc it doesn't matter, that's why it's also ethereal, since mercenaries won't lose durability on their items. If it is for the player, a dusk shroud, archon plate, wyrmhide, etc is preferable for the reason you mentioned. No speed reduction, decent defense and lower strength requirements. Andariel's Visage is easily the best. With only 3 items for the merc, it's important to have 1 item with LL and as much IAS as you can get.
